Good morning, Nigeria! You’re welcome to the Lagos Post Online News Roundup of today’s top newspaper headlines for Friday, August 29th, 2025.
The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari, claims that his life and the lives of the company’s management staff are under severe threat.
Ojulari, who disclosed this on Thursday while receiving a delegation of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) led by its President, Comrade Festus Osifo, at the NNPCL headquarters in Abuja, said his “offence” was the series of reforms he introduced in line with President Bola Tinubu’s mandate to revive the nation’s moribund refineries.
The NNPCL boss lamented that some “powerful elements” were bent on removing him from office.
The Interim National Working Committee of the Labour Party, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, has urged President Bola Tinubu to either fulfill his constitutional obligation of protecting lives and property or resign from his position.
The party accused the President and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of failing to address Nigeria’s worsening insecurity despite allocating trillions of naira and billions of dollars to defence spending in the last decade.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the party, Tony Akeni, stated that the current wave of insecurity was a cumulative failure of both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, which governed before 2015.
The Federal Government has maintained that the documents cited by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, were proposals, not signed agreements, contrary to claims made by the union.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made this clarification on Thursday while addressing journalists in Abuja.
He said both the 2009 and 2011 documents often cited by ASUU as binding agreements were never signed, but only proposals presented during negotiations.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed concerns over what it described as “statistically implausible” figures released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in its first-week report on new Continuous Voter registrations.
The party said the numbers from Osun State alone defy both historical patterns and demographic realities, with nearly 400,000 new registrations reportedly completed in just seven days.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC warned that such suspicious figures, if left unchecked, could undermine confidence in Nigeria’s entire electoral process.
Veteran journalist and Chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has said that President Bola Tinubu has already pocketed the South ahead of the 2027 election.
Momodu made this known while featuring on News Central TV’s Breakfast show on Thursday. He faulted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for zoning the presidential ticket to the South.
The veteran journalist stated that the zoning arrangement means there is no formidable actor from the North that can confront President Tinubu in 2027, and he would win the election easily.
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) announced an increase in the fees for obtaining the Nigerian Standard Passport, with the new rates taking effect on September 1, 2025.
The Service Public Relations Officer, Assistant Controller of Immigration, ACI AS Akinlabi, made this known in a statement he issued on Thursday to journalists.
The statement said the new fees will apply only to applications made within Nigeria.
The former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that he will not withdraw his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election, which he intends to contest under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform.
Amaechi made this known in an interview with BBC Hausa after a meeting with a coalition of traders in Kano state.
Amaechi, who also served as Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation from 2015 to 2022, insisted that the ADC primary election must be open, stressing that he would not step aside for any aspirant.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has mandated commercial banks, Fintechs, and all operators to geo-tag all Point of Sale (PoS) terminals in the country be geo-tagged within 60 days.
This is in a bid to curb fraud and improve oversight of the fast-growing PoS industry.
The directive, which affects licensed operators including Moniepoint, OPay, PalmPay, and commercial banks, requires that every PoS device currently in circulation be registered with its exact GPS coordinates. New PoS devices must also be geo-tagged before activation.
Leaders within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are actively consulting to convince former President Goodluck Jonathan to run as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2027 election.
Party sources confirmed to Vanguard Newspaper that a delegation of PDP leaders recently met with Jonathan to exert pressure on him to re-enter the race.
According to insiders, Jonathan did not give a definite answer during the meeting but told the party leaders that he was still consulting.
