Good morning, Nigeria! You’re welcome to the Lagos Post Online News Roundup of today’s top newspaper headlines for Friday, March 6th, 2026.
The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has issued a summons to Mele Kyari, the former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), along with his management team, to respond to allegations of N210 trillion in financial discrepancies.
Chairman of the committee, Senator Ahmed Wadada, announced the summons at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday.
Wadada said that the development followed the unsatisfactory and unacceptable response of NNPCL to the audited financial statements of the company between 2017 and 2023.
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has conveyed his profound grief following the unexpected death of Mr. Yesiro Karamo, who had recently been elected as the party’s Assistant Publicity Secretary in Lagos State.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Special Adviser to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Media and Communications Strategy, Abimbola Tooki on Friday.
Professor Yilwatda described the news of Karamo’s death as shocking and deeply painful, particularly coming only hours after he was elected to serve the party during the Lagos State APC Congress held at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium, Onikan.
Senator Seriake Dickson has taken a bold step in Nigerian politics, announcing the launch of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and his assumption of the role of National Leader.
The move follows his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a party to which he acknowledged owing a significant debt of gratitude.
Speaking on Thursday, Senator Dickson described the decision to leave the PDP as “painful,” recognising its contributions to both his career and the nation.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals reassures Nigerians of its unwavering commitment to serving as a stabilising force amid recent shocks in the international oil market.
The conflict in the Middle East has led to the shutdown of some refineries and a cut in refinery production across the world. This is leading to a global scarcity of petroleum products. China has banned the export of gasoline and diesel. The Dangote Refinery will ensure that Nigeria is insulated from these supply shocks by prioritising supply to the domestic market. This is one of the many benefits of domestic refining
The conflict has driven global crude and freight prices sharply higher, with benchmark Brent prices rising by about 26% within a short period to above $84.0 per barrel. In response, the refinery implemented a measured adjustment of N100 per litre in its ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit, representing an increase of about 12%. The refinery has absorbed 20% of the cost escalation, for now, to cushion the domestic market. This is despite continuing to source crude at prevailing international market prices, whether purchased locally or from foreign suppliers.
The FCT Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed that suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, remains in their custody.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Samson Duza, said this was despite Kyari being discharged in one of the cases against him.
Duza clarified in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja, while reacting to reports that a court had discharged Kyari.
Senator Seriake Dickson, who previously served as governor of Bayelsa state, has abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in favor of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dickson, while addressing a world press conference, said he is a man of conviction, warning that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is presently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
He added that the country cannot afford to drift into a one-party state.
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reportedly relieved Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Hundeyin of his duties as Force Public Relations Officer, just half a year into his tenure in the role.
In a report by an online medium Whistler, the decision was approved on Thursday, March 5, 2026, though the reason behind the move was not made public at the time of this report.
The change came shortly after a new leadership took over the police.
Federal High Court Judge Justice James Omotosho, sitting in Abuja, has cleared suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari of all 23 counts of alleged failure to declare assets, brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Kyari was arraigned alongside his two brothers, who were accused of allegedly swearing to false affidavits to conceal the origin of some properties said to be linked to the former police officer.
Delivering judgment, Justice Omotosho held that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence to establish the allegations against the defendants.
The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will no longer take place as originally planned, following a decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to push the tournament back to a new window running from July 25 to August 16, 2026.
The competition was originally scheduled to be played in several Moroccan cities from March 17, 2026, to April 3, 2026.
CAF confirmed the rescheduling on Thursday, explaining that the decision was taken due to unforeseen circumstances.
