Weak political will and the self-serving ambitions of some political office holders are the reasons for the underdevelopment of the Niger Delta, according to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Jonathan, who spoke in Abuja on Friday at the launch of The Hidden Treasures, a 202-page book written by former Delta State governorship aspirant Chris Iyovwaye, stated that political rivalry and the scramble for power have repeatedly stalled progress in the region.
This was echoed by ex-presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, and former Minister of Information, Prof Jerry Gana, who also highlighted the failure to act on long-standing regional plans as a challenge to the region’s development.
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has outlined the specific conditions necessary to call off its ongoing indefinite strike, according to Dr. Mohammad Suleiman, President of the association.
Suleiman said NARD’s NEC has narrowed its demands to seven priority issues that must be addressed.
Speaking in an interview with Saturday PUNCH on Friday, Suleiman explained that although three conciliation meetings were held and 19 items were discussed and agreed upon, the government had failed to implement any of the resolutions except for the partial payment of the 25–35 percent allowance.

Tiwa, interpreting the comment as a jab, swiftly responded with a warning: “Don’t start a war you can’t finish.”
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has questioned the withdrawal of military personnel from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, noting that it occurred shortly before the students’ abduction by bandits.
