The National Assembly (NASS) has put forward a proposal to move the presidential and governorship elections to November 2026, a change from their traditional February or March scheduling. This proposed shift comes in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
The proposal is contained in draft amendments to the 2022 Electoral Act, which currently stipulates that elections into both offices must be held not later than 185 days before the expiration of the incumbent’s tenure on May 29.
The proposals came to the fore on Monday at a one-day public hearing organised by the Senate and House of Representatives Joint Committee on Electoral Matters.
The Presidency has confirmed that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, is making a good recovery, providing an update on his health to Nigerians.
