Good morning, Nigeria! You’re welcome to the Lagos Post Online News Roundup of today’s top newspaper headlines for Wednesday, October 8th, 2025.
President Bola Tinubu has sought the House of Representatives’ approval to secure $2.35 billion in external financing. This capital is intended to partially cover the 2025 budget deficit and refinance Nigeria’s upcoming Eurobond maturities.
The request was contained in a formal letter addressed to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, which was read during Tuesday’s plenary session at the Green Chamber.
The President also sought parliamentary approval to issue a $500 million debut sovereign Sukuk in the International Capital Market (ICM) to finance infrastructure projects and broaden Nigeria’s access to global funding sources.
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have announced a nationwide protest for Thursday. This one-day demonstration stems from the Federal Government’s perceived failure to address the long-standing demands of university workers.
Both unions, under the umbrella of their Joint Action Committee (JAC), said all university branches have been directed to mobilise members across campuses for the protest, which will feature rallies, placard displays, and press briefings to draw attention to their grievances.
The decision to embark on the protest was taken on October 6, after JAC reviewed what it called the Federal Government’s “unsatisfactory response” to a series of ultimatums issued earlier in the year.
The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, has stepped down from his position. This resignation comes amidst accusations of certificate forgery made against him.
Presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development in a statement, saying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the minister’s resignation.
Onanuga said Nnaji, who was appointed in August 2023, tendered his resignation letter to the President, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to serve the nation.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This follows the conclusion of his second term in office.
Yakubu, who was first appointed in November 2015 as the 14th chairman of the commission and reappointed in 2020, has completed his tenure in accordance with constitutional provisions.
In a statement on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended Professor Yakubu for his “dedicated service to the nation and his efforts to sustain Nigeria’s democracy through the conduct of free and fair elections.”
National Commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, has taken over as the Commission’s Acting Chairperson.
Her appointment followed the formal handover of duties by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who proceeded on terminal leave ahead of the completion of his tenure.
The handover was announced at the INEC headquarters in Abuja during a stakeholders’ meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
Professor Mahmood Yakubu has proceeded on a terminal leave and handed over to May Agbamuche as the Acting National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Channels Television reports
Agbamuche is reported to be the oldest serving National Commissioner in the electoral body.
Professor Yakubu announced this on Tuesday at the ongoing meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, engaged in a heated exchange with Rufai Oseni, Arise TV’s anchor.
The altercation occurred during Umahi’s appearance on the Morning Show on Tuesday.
Umahi, who seemed displeased with the kind of questions asked by one of the show’s anchors, became angry after Oseni accused him of reporting him to President Bola Tinubu over his views on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road.
The Senate on Tuesday resumed plenary after a 10-week recess, with the Senate President Godswill Akpabio, presiding over the session.
Presence at the Senate chambers on Tuesday was the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is returning after a six-month suspension.
In a show of international solidarity, some senators arrived at the chamber dressed in Palestinian colours and attire, advocating for a free Palestine, Channels Television reports.
President Bola Tinubu has called a strategic meeting that will include the Council of State and the Police Council.
This development was made known in a statement released on Monday by the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
The statement, signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations of the SGF office, Segun Imohiosen, said the meeting, scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2025, aims to discuss matters of national importance and key issues affecting national security and policing.
The Presidency has stated that it would defer any immediate action against the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Uche Nnaji, who is currently facing a certificate forgery scandal, pending the court’s verdict.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made the clarification while responding to inquiries on the matter on Monday.
Onanuga, in an interview with The Leadership Newspaper, said, “This matter is already in court. We should await the verdict of the court.”
