Good morning, Nigeria! You’re welcome to the Lagos Post Online News Roundup of today’s top newspaper headlines for Thursday, October 9th, 2025.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has commented on the resignation of Uche Nnaji, who stepped down as Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology amidst allegations of certificate forgery.
In a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, Atiku said the certificate scandal has once again brought to light the deep moral crisis at the heart of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.
President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday accepted the resignation of the embattled erstwhile minister.
The Senate has summoned the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. They are required to appear before lawmakers to explain the Federal Government’s coordinated response to the escalating insecurity in the Kwara South Senatorial District.
The lawmakers also urged the Federal Government to establish a permanent military base in the zone, particularly near the forest belts of Ifelodun Local Government Area, to serve as a rapid-response hub against the rising wave of banditry and kidnappings.
The resolutions followed a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by Senator Ashiru Oyelola Yisa (Kwara South) during plenary on Wednesday.
The Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, has issued an arrest warrant for Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has been ordered to execute the arrest in connection with alleged contempt of court.
The fresh order came just hours after Yakubu’s exit from office as INEC chairman.
The ruling followed a motion filed by the Action Alliance (AA), which accused INEC and its former chairman of failing to comply with a subsisting court judgment delivered by Justice Funmilola Demi-Ajayi in suit number FHC/OS/CS/194/2024.
The All Progressives Congress (APC), the current ruling party, has been accused by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of pressuring opposition politicians to switch parties.
The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, made the allegation while speaking with reporters in Abuja on Wednesday.
Speaking against the backdrop of a claim by a former media aide to late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, Ologunagba said many of the defections are not voluntary, but based on harassment, inducement, coercion and intimidation.
The National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), Peter Ameh, has accused Professor Mahmood Yakubu, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), of undermining Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television on Wednesday, Ameh stated that Yakubu failed to accommodate the opposition during his 10-year tenure at the commission.
He further accused Yakubu of high-handedness, disregarding opposition parties, and failing to ensure transparency in the electoral process.
The Senate has confirmed receipt of detailed responses from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) regarding 19 audit queries. These queries concern an alleged ₦210 trillion in unaccounted funds within the NNPCL’s financial records from 2017 to 2023.
The development was confirmed by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Senator Aliyu Wadada (Nasarawa West), during a media briefing at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Wadada said the NNPCL management had earlier written to the committee during the National Assembly’s recess, seeking an extension to compile relevant data and documents before responding comprehensively to the committee’s inquiries.
The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has stated that Nigeria has averted economic collapse. He attributes this positive turn to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) recent monetary tightening policies, which he believes have brought about a degree of macroeconomic stability.
Sanusi made the remarks during an interview with News Central Televison on Wednesday, noting that the country was gradually recovering from years of fiscal indiscipline and excessive liquidity.
“We’re coming from a background of very high levels of instability as a result of loose money,” he said.
Following a court order that halted the exercise, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has suspended the nationwide enforcement of vehicle tinted glass permits.
The spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this on Wednesday during an interview on Africa Independent Television (AIT).
Adeh explained that the suspension would remain in place pending the outcome of the ongoing legal proceedings.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Chairman and former Senate President, David Mark, has stated that the party is establishing a new benchmark for opposition politics in Nigeria. This new standard, he explained, is founded on the principles of discipline, integrity, and competence.
Speaking during the ADC National Working Committee (NWC) meeting, Mark declared that the party’s vision was to build a political movement “bigger than any personality and stronger than any moment,” while proving that Nigeria can work for everyone.
“We begin with a conviction that Nigeria can, and will, work for everyone, and with a commitment to build a party bigger than any personality, stronger than any moment and positively different from any party in the annals of our country,” he said.
The former Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has clarified that his resignation from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet should not be seen as an admission of guilt in the certificate forgery scandal.
Nnaji tendered his resignation on Monday after a Premium Times investigation revealed that he did not complete his studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and that both the bachelor’s degree and NYSC certificate he presented to the Presidency, the Senate, and security agencies were forged.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Enugu-born politician explained that his decision followed “deep reflection and consultations” with family, associates, and well-meaning Nigerians.
