Good morning, Nigeria! You’re welcome to the Lagos Post Online News Roundup of today’s top newspaper headlines for Wednesday, September 10th, 2025.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has responded to the recent statements and subsequent retraction made by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, concerning Nigeria’s increasing debt.
The opposition party described the Speaker’s backpedalling as a missed opportunity for courageous leadership.
The House of Representatives Speaker was quoted as having raised an alarm over Nigeria’s rising debt profile, warning that it has surpassed the statutory ceiling and now poses a serious threat to fiscal sustainability.
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has asserted that additional governors are expected to join the party, a move he believes will bolster President Bola Tinubu’s pursuit of a second term.
He stated this on Tuesday during the 12th Expanded Stakeholders’ Meeting of the APC in Bayelsa State, where the party formally endorsed Tinubu as its sole presidential candidate for 2027.
Yilwatda, who was represented by the Deputy National Chairman (South), Emma Eneukwu, cited the recent defections of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, who both left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC, describing their move as a sign of the president’s growing influence.
The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has called off its ongoing nationwide strike over its disagreement with the Dangote Group.
NUPENG had on Monday declared a nationwide industrial action to protest the refusal of the Dangote Group to allow its workers to join the union, particularly NUPENG.
It was gathered that the strike was called off after parties reached an agreement at a meeting convened by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The Association of Distributors and Transporters of Petroleum Products (ADITOP) has accused the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) of extortion and excessive levies collection within the downstream sector.
This accusation came on the heels of a vote of no confidence passed on the leadership of NUPENG by the Lagos Zone of Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch of the union (PTD).
The vote of no confidence was passed on the National President, Comrade (Prince) Williams Akporeha, and the General Secretary, Comrade Afolabi Olawale, by the ADITOP, which accused them of greed, rascality, impunity, manipulation, highhandedness, and gross incompetence in leadership.
Explosions on Tuesday rocked Doha, Qatar, as Israeli media have attributed these blasts to an attack targeting high-ranking Hamas officials.
Multiple explosions were reported in Qatar’s capital, Doha, this afternoon, followed by plumes of smoke rising above areas where some of the embassies are located.
Reacting in a statement, the Israeli army confirmed it targeted Hamas officials in Qatar’s capital.
The Presidency has described former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye‘s comments regarding Nigeria’s increasing debt as “political theatrics,” dismissing his remarks.
Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, in a post via his verified 𝕏 handle on Tuesday, said Melaye’s comments amounted to “entertainment, not enlightenment.”
Melaye had, during an interview on Arise News, criticised the Tinubu administration’s borrowing pattern, alleging that Nigeria’s debt profile was so alarming that the government might soon resort to borrowing from local fintech firms.
The former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, visited the former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in Birnin Kebbi on Monday. The visit was a show of solidarity after Malami’s convoy was reportedly attacked.
Atiku condemned the incident, describing it as part of a “dangerous trend” of politically motivated violence targeting leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking after the visit, Atiku urged security agencies to act swiftly, warning that the growing attacks on political actors could undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
A former senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has expressed concern about the frequency of borrowing by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Melaye said Tinubu may soon borrow from Nigeria’s leading fintech companies, Opay and Moniepoint, if care is not taken.
He was reacting to the concerns raised by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, over the rate of foreign loans by Tinubu’s administration.
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the 32-member House of Assembly are scheduled to return to office on September 18, 2025, barring any unforeseen changes.
The development comes six months after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the oil-rich state, suspending all elected officials and appointing Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) as Sole Administrator.
Indications of Fubara’s imminent return emerged last week, according to sources who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune. This development followed a closed-door meeting between the President and the Sole Administrator at the Presidential Villa.
