UI VC Election: Group Advises Oyegun-Led Council To Disqualify Two Candidates

The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan headed by John Odigie Oyegun has been advised to disqualify two candidates contesting as Senate Representatives on the Board for the appointment of Vice Chancellor.

An education group, Education Governance with Integrity (EGI) in a release on Saturday by the Public Relations Officer of the group Segun Adebayo noted that the names of one Professor P.O Olapegba and another Prof. E.O Ayoola had been implicated as biased candidates in a petition before the council as routing for a candidate of the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka.

The group advised the Council to review the petition against the duo ahead of the October 12 elections in order to get the emergence of the best of the over 15 candidates as josttling to become UI next Vice Chancellor.

According to the group, a text message from a former Dean of Science had circulated before the federal government asked that process should start all over again.

The text reads: “Good morning. As promised, our two candidates for selection committee are Prof Peter Olamakinde Olapegba and Prof Ezekiel Ayoola. Pls campaign for them separately . And never link them formally with Prof Adebowale. Election is on 21 Sept. Thanks. Prof Ayodele.”

Another reads: “We thank God my Dean. We can see that God already answered our prayers. It shall be permanent.  Greetings to Adebowale, our wonderful candidate. His papers/ application is second to none. We shall celebrate today. Regards. We thank God ”

At the moment, five persons contesting to be on the Selection Board for the Appointment of Vice Chacellor slated for 12 October 2021 are: Professor E.O Ayoola (Mathematics), Prof. O.J Babayemi (Animal Science), Professor P.O Olapegba (Psychology), Professor E.A Ajav (Agric and Environmental Engineering) and Professor Oyeduntan A. Adediran (Vet parasitology).

The group also noted the integrity of the process is being challenged with the refusal of about 10 candidates in the recently held Community Forum where only one candidate from within and three from outside participated.

Adebayo stated that boycott Community should tell organisers about how the forum is now being seen as a jamboree that has no contribution to the entire process.

EGI stated that “UI awards certificates based on character and learning and people with dubious character should not be allowed to emplaced those less qualified to govern UI. It is a clarion to call to Council Chairman Odigie Oyegun and the Alumni association to step up and ensure this is not pushed under the carpet.

“It is important to note that all candidates who contested in the previous discredited process have stepped down except the duo of Professors Olapegba and Ayoola who petitions were written against them as having special interest in a particular candidate. This was why the Ministry of Education asked that the process should be kick started. It is imperative the the Council reviews this again ahead of the election and read the Instruction from the Ministry of Education on what needs to be done. May the University of Ibadan continues to tower highest.”

The election of the next UI vice Chancellor is expected to end on 14 of October with the announcement of the selected candidate.

Before then, electronic voting will take place on 12th October to elect two Senate Representatives on the Board of Appointment of Vice Chancellor. This is be made up of five persons: the Chairman of the Governing Council, two external members of Council and the two Senate Representatives to be elected on Tuesday.

The Council is expected to screen about 15 candidates out of which one, Professor Remi Raji has reportedly withdrawn from the race. The may also not be unconnected with the way the entire process is being handled. Top contenders are acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebola Ekanola, Deputy Vice Chancellor administration Professor Kayode Adebowale and former Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Professor Adeyinka .A.Aderinto.
