Wayne Rooney Says Man United Have “Gotten Worse” Under Amorim

Ruben Amorim‘s struggles as head coach of Manchester United have been highlighted by the club’s all-time leading scorer and former captain, Wayne Rooney, who claims there has been little progress since Amorim’s appointment.

The former United captain and all-time top scorer said on The Wayne Rooney Show that it is becoming increasingly difficult to defend Amorim’s reign.

“I want to be as supportive and positive as I can be with the manager and the players,” Rooney said. “But it is very difficult to sit here and say we are seeing progression… We’re seeing none of that, and it is very difficult.”

United suffered yet another setback on Sunday, falling 3-0 to Manchester City in the derby, a defeat that prompted many away fans to leave the Etihad Stadium long before the final whistle.

“There was an image towards the end of the game where I saw the Manchester United fans leaving. You could hear the fans singing Amorim’s name, but I think that is so powerful that the United fans were leaving the game,” Rooney added.

Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag on November 1 last year, has spent nearly £250 million on transfers while reshaping the squad into his preferred 3-4-3 system. Yet the Red Devils continue to flounder. Last season, they finished 15th in the Premier League with just 42 points, their lowest haul since 1973-1974, when they were relegated.

“I think if the manager is honest with himself, it has got worse,” Rooney said.
