LG Election: Oyo PDP Withdraws From Participation

The leading opposition party in Oyo State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced its withdrawal from participating in Saturday local government election, which the party predicted it’s outcome as an effort in futility.

The Chairman of PDP in the State, Alh Kunmi Mustapha, at the end of the party’s State Working Committee meeting held at the Molete party secretariat, Ibadan has directed its members to distance themselves from the Saturday local government elections in Oyo State.

Mustapha in a release signed by the State Publicity Secretary of PDP, Engr Akeem Olatunji, declared that the purported local government elections from all indications has failed integrity test and a complete mockery of democracy due to the undemocratic remarks of OYSIEC Chairman on a radio programme that he is not bound to obey Court Order as regards the conduct of the Saturday LG elections.

The Chairman further said that it is against the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for a State electoral body to delineate wards which is the statutory responsibility of Boundary Adjustment Commission in conjunction with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding electoral procedure.

It will therefore amounted to legalizing an illegality if PDP should participate in the sham election.

“PDP as a party will never circumvent the constitution because it will lay a bad precedence”.

Engr Akeem Olatunji quoted the State Chairman of PDP, Alh Kunmi Mustapha, that “Iot baffles right thinking citizens that a government who refused to conduct local government elections for the past seven years citing cases instituted in court would now insisted on conducting LG elections at a time critical stakeholders  are crying foul with four different cases in court”.

Mustapha later urged the electorates “to boycott the local government poll on Saturday based on the fact that if an ordinary Ward Congress of APC could result to violence and infliction of injuries on their own party members and passersby, it will be suicidal and wasteful venture to participate in an elections of which its outcome is an effort in futility.

“To the good people of Oyo State and even majority of APC leaders apart from Gov Ajimobi faction of the party knows quite well that the foundation of the local government elections is being erected on sand and can’t stand the test of time”.

The Chairman of PDP in Oyo State therefore felicitate with Governor Ayodele Fayose and the entire members of Ekiti State including the Governorship candidate of PDP in Ekiti State and the runner’s up in the primary for their honesty, sincerity, transparency and good sportsmanship before, during and after the conduct of the party’s primary election.

“It shows that PDP as a party has learnt greatly from her rich experience of the past and Oyo State will not be found wanting when the time comes to elect candidates for 2019 elections in Oyo State”.

The party’s Chairman, Alh Kunmi Mustapha, however invited party members and the general public to the inauguration of the Oyo State Executives, State Caucus and the State Elders Committee which will come up on Monday 14th of May 2018 by 10am prompt at Molete in Ibadan.
